Your Shot community member Félix Morlán González captured this powerful image of a bellowing stag while in the United Kingdom in October 2014. The majestic sight moved him to make a photo that highlighted the natural setting and the power of this driven animal. “The idea was to [show] that cold atmosphere there first thing in the morning in the forest,” he writes. “For this I … framed the deer in vegetation. Light fog increased the strength of the image. I wanted to reflect in a natural way the beautiful spectacle of rutting, the spectacle of a great male bellowing. The males do not feed during the rutting season … For days they roar and fight with other males [and attract] as many females as possible.”

In Singapore, which aims to be a “city in a garden,” greenery cascading off a luxury hotel soothes a guest in a balcony pool.

IN 1865 THE GREAT LANDSCAPE architect Frederick Law Olmsted looked out over the Yosemite Valley and saw a place worth saving. He urged the California legislature to protect it from rampant development. Olmsted had already designed Central Park in New York City; he was convinced that beautiful green spaces should exist for all people to enjoy. “It is a scientific fact,” he wrote, “that the occasional contemplation of natural scenes of an impressive character … is favorable to the health and vigor of men and especially to the health and vigor of their intellect.”

Your Shot member Manuel Schulz traveled to Iceland to capture some images of the country’s avian residents. After deciding to camp for an extra night in Látrabjarg, weather conditions changed on him. “The weather conditions looked great, but shortly before the light was getting nice, a thick wall of fog moved in from the sea and up the cliffs,” Schulz writes. “It was very impressive to see.” Schulz used a wide-angle lens and got close to the cliff’s edge to get this shot of these puffins as they waited for better hunting conditions.

A Cool Drink

“I usually use this pond for taking pictures of birds,” writes Your Shot member Milan Zygmunt. “I didn’t expect the fox [would] come to drink.” Zygmunt takes his photos from a small hide in the bushes at this pond in the Zdarske Vrchy, a protected nature area in the Czech Republic.

This nuclear reactor at Kalkar, Germany, was finished just before the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl, Ukraine—and never used. It’s now an amusement park with a ride in what would have been the cooling tower. Fear of nuclear power spurred Germany’s transition.

A Guiding Light

Your Shot member Adrian Theze made this photograph at Staðastaður on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. “I awoke to … perfect weather,” he writes, “so I decided to make the three-hour drive from Reykjavík to Snaefellsnes. As I drove the dawn skies were stunning, matching the scenery perfectly, and I [stopped] the car every few miles to take pictures. Driving along Snaefellsnesvegur toward Arnarstapi, I could see patches of light illuminating the mountainside in a kaleidoscope of pattern and color—but I needed a foreground subject to make my photograph. All I could see were fields and mountains, and I was beginning to give up hope, but then the church came into view. The sun broke through the clouds, bathing the church and mountainside in golden light.”
